‘Vampira’ Maila Nurmi Dead at Age 85

Long before Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Cassandra Peterson, graced our TV screens, Vampira was the mistress of TV horror movies.
Acress Maila Nurmi played Vampira, the television horror movie hostess back in the 1950s. Maila Nurmi passed away January 10 at the age of 85.
Vampira hosted horror movies beginning in 1954 on KABC TV in Los Angeles. The Vampira show was canceled, but Maila Nurmi also appeared in “Plan 9 from Outer Space,” a cult classic.
While Vampira clearly inspired Cassandra Peterson in her role as Elvira (and Maila Nurmi lost a $10 million lawsuit against Cassandra Peterson), Vampira also is said to have inspired Morticia Addams on The Addams Family.
The cause of death is unknown at this time.
