They’re Trying to Take Away His Life

Last night’s episode of Life was truly unique. Detectives Charlie (Damian Lewis) and Dani (Sarah Shahi) were confronted by a man who’s mysterious death was even more baffling when you look at his life. “Farthingale,” who had died when the stove in his nearly-empty stove exploded, had essentially split himself into two people. No, not literally.

“Farthingale” existed only to work. Working in the IRS, his coworkers and his boss knew nearly nothing about him. Not even his clients knew who he was as he was identifiable only by “Farthing” was happily married, working as a spy. “Gale” was happily married, working as a spy. Oh yes, Farthing and Gale – Farthingale – are “both” happily married to two different women. Both believe he is a spy who has to be away for weeks at a time. I guess if you’re going to lie, telling them both the same lie is the best way to do it. Easier to keep track that way.

Charlie and Dani spent considerable time, trying to figure out what Farthing and Gale did that was the same in his two lives. Finally, they learned he was a light sleeper in both marriages. And when he couldn’t sleep, he would sit in a chair in front of the fireplace. On the mantle, were a number of things – none similar. Finally, in “five” comes up. Five caps (different teams, maybe different sports – I’m not a Sports person, so they probably said and I didn’t catch on) and five different bottles of wine (different color wine bottles, different size wine bottles and a mix of red and white wines – I know my wine).

Finally, from there a pattern ensues, and they learn that he was, in essence, after what he told his wives: he was after the guy who was not not breaking the law, and he was not after the guy who was not breaking the law. The guy he was after is a serial bomber – every few years he would show up on the tax record, pay his taxes like a respectable citizen, bomb somewhere/something, and then go back under, and show up again a few years later. Clearly, Charlie and Dani end up arresting him.

Meanwhile, in Charlie’s own life, one of the men – on the police force – who helped put him away turns up. Dead. Even though Charlie is in the office of his boss at the time, he’s still a prime suspect. And he admits that he would be if it were his case, too. Who would want him dead more than the person who had been put behind bars for twelve years for a crime he didn’t commit? Thing is, when Charlie wasn’t their, his boss told Dani that she’d been partnered with him to get him off the force. “He’s not going back to jail. He can do anything now.”

When they break in on his house, they almost find his wall, but it’s been moved. I think now Charlie’s probably wondering the same things I am: who can he trust? Anyone?
