Striking Writers Upset with Ellen DeGeneres

Wow, looks like Ellen DeGeneres isn’t making any friends with the writers on strike. In a bold move, she chose to cross the picket line and continue taping her show, despite the fact that much of the television community is backing their writers by picketing alongside them (you’ve probably seen pictures of the casts of “Ugly Betty,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Scrubs” and “Grey’s Anatomy” out on the line, among others).
DeGeneres has the Writers Guild of America bothered, despite her explanation that she would perform without a monologue and planned to carry on her show for those who traveled to see it. As a result, WGA is planning to protest DeGeneres’ tapings in NYC on November 19 and 20.
According to the WGA East, “We certainly intend to let Ellen know our dissatisfaction in person if she decides to proceed with the shows she has scheduled in New York…We find it sad that Ellen spent an entire week crying and fighting for a dog she gave away, yet she couldn’t even stand by her writers for more than one day—writers who have helped make her extremely successful.”
“Ellen’s staff is no more important than the rest of the Industry. When shows refuse to stand with us, they create huge revenue streams for the companies, and that prolongs the strike for the thousands of staff and crew members who are noble enough to honor our picket lines. We find this situation hurtful to those people and extremely unfortunate.”
