Dick Martin, one half of the comedy team “Rowan and Martin,” seen in 1968-1973’s “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In,” died Saturday night of respiratory complications. He was 86.
Dick Martin’s spokesman commented, “He had had some pretty severe respiratory problems for many years, and he had pretty much stopped breathing a week ago.”
“Laugh-In” was a comedy-variety show that can best be described as zany, featuring a cast that included Ruth Buzzi, Arte Johnson, Henry Gibson, Jo Anne Worley and announcer Gary Owens.
Dan Rowan and Dick Martin led the “Laugh-In” show, with Rowan acting as straight man to Dick Martin’s quirky character.
“Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” made stars of Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin, and featured catchphrases such as “Sock it to me” and “You bet your sweet bippy.”
After “Laugh-In,” Dick Martin went on to direct episodes of “Newhart,” “In the Heat of the Night,” “Archie Bunker’s Place” and “Family Ties.” Dick Martin also acted on several TV series in guest roles.
Dick Martin died surrounded by friends and family at a Santa Monica hospital.
