“Mike & Molly” creator Mark Roberts responds to that Maura Kelly Marie Claire “fatties” article, calling her blog “hateful,” after Kelly wrote about her disgust with overweight people being romantic on TV – and in life, in general.
In Maura Kelly’s Marie Claire article called, “Should ‘fatties’ get a room?” she writes:
“I think I’d be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other … because I’d be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room — just like I’d find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair.”
Kelly has since apologized, but that doesn’t erase the hateful words.
Mike & Molly creator Mark Roberts tells The Hollywood Reporter that Kelly “said some pretty hateful things.” Roberts adds, “I feel protective and angry about people being loose-lipped.”
Mike Roberts says the whole article makes him “sad,” saying: “Jackie Gleason would never get on TV now because he’s a large man who drank on TV. We’ve taken steps backward under the guise of what’s healthy. Almost everybody I know struggles with something — whether it’s their weight or alcohol or temper. To stand in judgment of somebody — especially when you’re breaking it down to just the aesthetic. It just makes me sad … wow that makes me sound much more upset than I really am. But I am un-friending that woman on Facebook.”
In this Today show video clip, they talk about how, while Maura Kelly’s blog post was completely insensitive, it has opened up a discussion:
