For all those putting Cook down for not stating that it was Chris Cornell’s version of Billie Jean himself, get real. The contestants DO NOT explain every cover they do. HELLO! ALL the songs are covers. For example, although I don’t remember the exact song (a Beatles song I think), Archie didn’t point it out when he sang an Elton John version rather than the original version. I, myself, only knew this because Simon mentioned it after the performance. Same situation with no controversy. Hardly fair to Cook. Cook was brave for choosing a lesser known arrangement of the song. Only diehard Cornell fans even knew it was his arrangement. And yes, to all you Cornell fans, it was stated at the beginning of the performance by Seacrest. The only reason for the “controversy” was that Cook sang the hell out of every song he sang and was ALWAYS better than the original artist. Sour grapes, I think.

honestly now… since when do the performers (at this point of the competition) go into detail about their song choice unless asked. These people are having heart attacks the closer they get to the deal. The only thing they’re thinking is “Please Like It!” and everyone did. He did an amazing job. For those who didn’t know, it was Chris Cornell’s arrangement that he performed. I knew this because I listened to Sound Garden & now Audioslave. If you didn’t know, look it up instead of bashing the guy. Ryan DID mention it before David began to perform.
FYI: The full studio version was recorded as it was CC’s. David improvised a bit when he went up live…and sounded even better.

Susan you’re not very bright, and everyone else on this forummsticking up for Cooke is missing the point…..He, himself,NOT Ryan-should have mentioned CC…he stood there with that cocky grin on his face as if he was the brilliant arranger of the song.BUT….he did do a decent job….for a rip off artist.

it was stated in the beginning that it was cornell, version and anyone who knows thier music will know he did a great job and has true talent.

and who the hell is chris cornell ..? never heard of him.. david cook did a fantastic job…. all these songs have been done by all the artists…for years anyway…

He did take credit. Ryan says it very fast, surrounded by screaming girls. I was watching the show and I didn’t find out until today that it was really Chris Cornell. You would think that after Randy said that crap about David being so original, etc., and Paula doing the same, that David would have said SOMETHING to give Chris another nod. But he did not. The writer of this article obviously didn’t know either.
