Lost just redeemed itself

I’ve been a fan of the show “Lost” since the first five minutes of the pilot episode when Jack ran around pulling people out of the burning wreckage. I eagerly wondered why polar bears were on a tropical island and what the hell that black smoke was all about. I forgave JJ Abrams for killing off Shannon who happened to be my favorite character (admittedly I may be the only person who can claim to have loved Shannon other than Sayid). I embraced The Others, even if it was reluctantly. But I confess, this season I have been Bored with a capital B. too much Others, not enough interest, and way too little of the original survivors of the crashed flight. It was like the second Desmond blew the hatch I stopped caring.

Last night’s episode brought it back for me. Spoilers lurk so beware if you still have last night’s episode stored on your Tivo.

Oh my hell, John’s father not only stole a kidney from him, he tried to kill him! The gasp that left my mouth when John was pushed out that window was so loud that it was embarrassing. I was very excited to find out – finally – how John had lost use of his legs. I still wonder what it is about the island that lets him walk. I also wonder why John has to ruin everyone else’s chances for rescue by blowing up the submarine, but as much as I love his character, he doesn’t give much of a crap about anyone else anyway.

I’m confused by Jack. Yes, getting off the island and finding help might be everyone’s only chance of survival but why is he trusting the people who consistently lie to him and to each other? Did he get a lobotomy in their camp?

Ben continues to be my favorite villain EVER. He is smooth, promising Jack that as soon as he leaves the island his friends will be released. Don’t hold your breath Jack.

The ending blew my mind. I don’t know what I expected to see inside that locked room – actually I was surprised they showed us anything at all, I thought they would just show John’s face and then stop the episode there, taunting us for another week – but John’s father bound and gagged was certainly not it. Nice shock there. I can’t wait to see where they’re going with this.

So once again, the writers manage to suck me in. It’s a good thing they’re picking up the pace because I was starting to worry their ratings would drop and the show would be cancelled without ever revealing the answers to all our many questions, leaving us, you know… lost.
