The Jon and Kate Plus 8 season premiere showed a very strained relationship between Jon and Kate, with their interviews taking place separately until the end, and the 5th birthday party for the sextuplets appearing to be one long awkward situation for the couple.

In the end, the producers asked what the status of their relationship is, with Jon commenting, “I really don’t know” and Kate commenting that she wakes up, breathes, and works hard because of her kids and is “committed to not letting any of this harm them.”

Kate also said that she’s home every minute that work doesn’t require her to be away, with Jon adding, “I’m here for my kids.”

When asked if the birthday party was bittersweet, Kate broke down in tears, saying she wondered if it could possibly be their last family picture: “…thinking back five years ago and realizing… parents of multiples have like triple the divorce rate and thinking we were going to beat that. And I don’t know if I can say that anymore.”

Kate Gosselin commented on how she and John “very swiftly we turned into different people and it’s just very hard.” She added that she’s tried for six months to figure out the problem is and remedy it, but it’s so complicated and difficult.

Jon said the kids got to have a normal birthday party, saying, “we will come together for our kids, regardless of our relationship.”

Bottom line, Jon says their relationship is their business.

The Jon & Kate Plus 8 season premiere ended with the first cookout at their new house – with Jon saying it’s hard to picture things in the future, but the scene clearing showing how they’re trying to come together for their kids.
