John McCain suspends campaign, cancels David Letterman
John McCain announced today that he would suspend his campaign to return to Washington in light of the current financial crisis. John McCain also canceled his David Letterman Late Show appearance tonight – and David Letterman naturally had some jokes to lighten the situation.

David Letterman told his audience about the news that John McCain suspended his campaign (and, incidentally is calling to delay Friday’s debate with Barack Obama). But David Letterman also had some digs to share.

Discovering that John McCain was in an interview with Katie Couric during the taping of his show, he cut over to the live video of the interview and said, “Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?”

David Letterman addressed that John McCain suspends his campaign earlier in his show, saying, “You don’t suspend your campaign. This doesn’t smell right. This isn’t the way a tested hero behaves. I think someone’s putting something in his metamucil.”

Further, David Letterman joked, “He can’t run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she?”

And there’s more – David Letterman also dug deep: “What are you going to do if you’re elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We’ve got a guy like that now!”

Man, I love Letterman!
