Jay Leno is leaving late night – but moving to primetime, as NBC is expected to make an announcement today that Leno will have a nightly 10 p.m. talk show on the network.
Jay Leno’s new show is likely not to look much different from the Tonight Show, although the late night show will continue with hosting duties to be taken over by Conan O’Brien in May 2009.
The decision to keep Jay Leno on in another show will benefit NBC because Leno is the late-night ratings leader – this move also keeps Leno from going to another network with a late-night show to compete with NBC.
Jay Leno’s new show will begin in the fall, with a format similar to the Tonight Show, including his monologue, “Headlines” and “Jay Walking.”
