Sad news for soap fans – James Mitchell, All My Children’s Palmer Cortlandt, died at the age of 89 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

James Mitchell played tycoon Palmer Cortlandt for 30 years on “All My Children.”

Mitchell’s heart disease was complicated by pneumonia, according to his longtime partner Albert Wolsky.

Mitchell was also a dancer and stage actor, appearing on Broadway in “Paint Your Wagon” and “Carousel.” He appeared on film in 1953′s “The Band Wagon” with Fred Astaire, as well as “Deep in My Heart” and “Oklahoma!”

James Mitchell was last seen as Palmer Cortlandt for AMC’s 40th anniversary episode on January 5.
