Hulu to Start Charging in 2010 – No More Free Shows on Hulu

Well, this sucks. Hulu will be changing its business model soon – say goodbye to free shows, and hello to a fee based subscription.
News Corp. Deputy Chairman Chase Carey commented at a Broadcasting & Cable summit, “It’s time to start getting paid for broadcast content online. I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content. Hulu concurs with that, it needs to evolve to have a meaningful subscription model as part of its business.”
While no date has been given for when Hulu will start charging, Carey believes it will begin in 2010.

This may not be all bad. Hulu may be pushing forward with this because they believe viewer habits are changing, which may signal a move away from traditional television viewing. Take this argument all the way through and it could signal the death of cable television. Crazy?
