Meredith spent most of the night hovering between life and death and chatting it up with the Odd Dead Couple, Denny and Dylan, somewhere in the white-light area.

But it was mostly Denny who talked her through some issues and got her to admit that when she fell into the water, she stopping fighting for her own life. “I thought, just for a second, what’s the point?” she confided. Meredith quickly began to realize all the reasons she had to live and spoke for many fans when she said, “I had intimacy issues. Do you know how stupid that seems now?” Finally, Meredith’s return to the world of the living began, but not before she crossed paths with Momma Grey, who was heading for her place in the afterlife. Meredith’s dying mom, Ellis, hugged her daughter and told her she’s “anything but ordinary,” before Meredith ran away from the light and got her heart-rate monitor beeping again.

McHelpless: McDreamy tried in vain to save Ellis Grey before getting the miraculous news that his beloved Meredith was going to be all right. He navigated a puzzle of emotions while he waited, even lashing out at Meredith’s mom for always looking down on her daughter, and leaving room for the possibility that Meredith didn’t try to save herself. But when it was all over, he sat, relieved, next to Meredith while his ex-wife Addison noted that he never felt that way about her.

99-cent remedy: Thanks to Denny, viewers who already knew that Cristina’s father died when she was 9, learned that he passed in a car accident. She had watched her father bleed to death, so she couldn’t stand watching Meredith. She went to the 99-cent store and apparently bought one of everything as a way to cope. She finally faced her fear, at Burke’s urging, went back to the hospital, and helped give Meredith the last push she needed to keep living.

The other woman: Izzie confronted Callie about being an interloper and told her that her marriage to George doesn’t mean anything. That didn’t go over very well. Callie told Izzie she’s here to stay, and that if Izzie doesn’t get used to it she’ll eventually become a friend George used to have. George told Izzie that he needs her friendship now that his dad is dead, but that she kept “taking that away.”

Falling for Jane Doe? Alex got more and more friendly with the pregnant woman he helped rescue from the ferry accident. When she woke up, she didn’t remember the accident or anything before it, but she remembered Alex’s face. She also had a ring line on her finger, but no ring, and wasn’t sure if she was married. No one has claimed her, but it’s looking like Alex might.

60-day probation: Addision and McSteamy decided it would be a waste to throw away their history together. She proposed that if he could abstain from sex with anyone — including her — for 60 days, they could try the couple thing. He then suggested that she, too, remain celibate for 60 days. She slyly asked who she would possibly hook up with before the scene quickly and not so subtly switched to Alex
