Gov. Eliot Spitzer formerly announced this morning (March 12) that he is resigning from his post. This comes on the heels of Monday’s media exposure of Eliot Spitzer’s involvement in a prostitution ring. The Eliot Spitzer resignation news conference is in the video clip above.

During the news conference, Eliot Spitzer commented, “I look at my time as governor with a sense of what might have been. There is much more to be done, and I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people’s work.”

Eliot Spitzer announced that his resignation is effective Monday, with Lt. Gov. David Paterson replacing him. Paterson will become New York’s first black governor.

Eliot Spitzer’s wife, Silda, stood by his side during the resignation announcement.
