I really wanted to like the new CBS series, “Welcome to the Captain,” that stars “Arrested Development’s” Jeffrey Tambor (Uncle Saul) and Chris Klein (Marty), but the pilot episode for me fell flat.

In “Welcome to the Captain,” the main character, Josh Flug (Fran Kranz) moves into the El Capitan apartment building in L.A. upon the advice of his friend Marty (Klein), rather than moving to New York. Josh is recovering from a breakup and trying to get his writing career back on track after having won an Oscar for writing a short film some years before.

The Captain is where the action is at — Uncle Saul provides words of wisdom (or so he thinks), there’s the sexy cougar, played by Raquel Welch, a wannabe actress names Astrid (Valerie Azlynn) and a love interest in Hope (Joanna Garcia). Oh yeah, and don’t forget the nutty bellman, Jesus (Al Madrigal).

Nothing new or inspired here, but I’ll give “Welcome to the Captain” another shot and see if it doesn’t grow on me. I’m guessing it won’t though.
