Wow, looks like Ellen DeGeneres isn’t making any friends with the writers on strike. In a bold move, she chose to cross the picket line and continue taping her show, despite the fact that much of the television community is backing their writers by picketing alongside them (you’ve probably seen pictures of the casts of “Ugly Betty,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Scrubs” and “Grey’s Anatomy” out on the line, among others). The writers’ strike is definitely having an impact on shows, and “Lost” is no exception. With the lack of a resolution for writers, the creators of “Lost” may be forced to air a shortened season. The original plan for the show was a return to the air in February – with a full “re-run free” season. With the lack of writers to pen the show, however, the show may have to run the eight episodes that they have already filmed, leaving the remaining eight episodes for the following season. Series creator/exec producer Damon Lindelof has said that the eighth hour is a cliffhanger, so it would work to end the season with that show.
Ellen DeGeneres is taking the heat for crossing picket lines to carry on with the taping of her show, especially when so many other shows have seen their actors joining the writers in their protest. Ellen stated that the reason she carried on was because of people who may have traveled long distances in order to be at the taping of her show and she didn’t want to let them down but the protesting writers are unimpressed.
Ellen tried to smooth ruffled feathers with this statement to her audience:
“I want to say I love my writers. I love them. In honor of them today, I’m not going to do a monologue. I support them and hope that they get everything they’re asking for. And I hope it works out soon. In the meantime, people have traveled across the country. They’ve made plans. They’re here. I want to do everything I can to make your trip enjoyable and give you a show.”
Eva Longoria tried to mingle with the writers on strike while they protested but she was met with some snarkiness. She tried to smooth ruffled feathers by bringing them pizza to eat but their response was “this is not the piece of the pie we meant”. Nice try, Eva!
On top of his DUI and his jail sentence, Kiefer Sutherland is officially out of work; 24 has been placed on indefinite hiatus due to the writers’ strike. Not enough episodes have been written to keep the show going through the Winter.
