NBC news correspondent Andrea Mitchell announced on air tonight that she has breast cancer and urged other women to get screening done.

Mitchell explains, “I had planned to be hiking in Wyoming last week, but instead discovered that I am now among the 1 in 8 women in this country — incredibly 1 in 8 — who have had breast cancer.

Mitchell said her cancer was caught in the “earliest stages” and that her prognosis is “terrific.”

She shared, “I’m looking at this as another of life’s lessons. For you women out there and the men who love you, screening matters. Do it. This disease can be completely curable if you find it at the right time.”

In a press release today, Apple announced that Steve Jobs resigned as Chief Executive Officer and the board named Tim Cook as new CEO.

Tim Cook was previously Apple’s Chief Operating Officer.

Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple’s Board, noted: “Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company. Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

Levinson continued: “The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO. Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does.”

This is Gabby’s first return since she was shot by a gunman in January. Giffords made an appearance to cast her vote, but the reception was overwhelming, as she received a 10 minute standing ovation from members of Congress.

John Edwards has been indicted on criminal charges having to do with the cover up of his affair with Rielle Hunter.

More than $1 million in campaign money, provided by political donors, was used to cover the affair by hiding his mistress.

According to a National Enquirer source, Rielle Hunter “dumped him…their relationship is pretty much over…there’s no repairing it now.”

The source maintains that the breakup happened just days before Edwards’ indictment.

The Enquirer reports that John Edwards wanted Rielle Hunter to cover for him: “Rielle snapped at him, ‘I can’t help you! My only concern is raising our daughter.’”
