Obama also talks about the nerves associated with such a mission: “As nervous as I was about this whole process, the one thing I didn’t lose sleep over was the possibility of taking bin Laden out… If I’m sending those guys in and Murphy’s Law applies and something happens, can we still get our guys out?”

As for the timing of the bin Laden mission, Obama shares, “I made the decision Thursday night, informed my team Friday morning, and then we flew off to look at the tornado damage. To go to Cape Canaveral, to make a commencement speech. And then we had the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night. So this was in the back of my mind all weekend.”

Obama also noted, “It was the longest 40 minutes of my life, with the possible exception of when Sasha got meningitis.”

President Obama spoke briefly about the death of Osama bin Laden before presenting to the Medal of Honor recipients.

During President Obama’s statement, he confirmed that Osama bin Laden is dead and that the U.S. has bin Laden’s body. Obama shared these details:

“Tonight I can report to the American people and the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden,” Obama said.

“Justice has been done,” Obama said, sharing the details of how Osama bin Laden was killed:

“Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Usama bin Laden and took custody of his body.”
