Randy didn’t think it was one of his strongest performances; Paula said he’s the whole package and she believes in him; Simon didn’t like it very much, thought it was pompous.

Randy said there were some pitch problems, but it was really good; Paula said it was her best performance; Simon thought she was very good.

Syesha Mercado sings “I Believe” by Fantasia in this April 8 American Idol video clip. Syesha Mercado nicely relates the “I Believe” lyrics to the “Idol Gives Back” concept this week.

Randy said it was ok, but he didn’t feel a connection; Paula said it was one of Syesha Mercado’s most shining nights; Simon thought she sang it very well, but it lacked a big wave of emotion.

David Archuleta sings “Angels” by Robbie Williams in this April 8 American Idol video clip. David Archuleta describes the lyrics of “Angels” and its message that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

Randy said that was David Archuleta’s hottest moment the whole season; Paula said it was fantastic; Simon said it was the best song choice of the night, but thought it was a bit nasally, but he’ll sail through.

Jason Castro sings “Over the Rainbow” by Bruddah Iz (Hawaiian musician Israel “Iz” Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole) in this April 8 American Idol video clip. Jason Castro is looking more comfortable in his interview segment, where he tells about the “Over the Rainbow” lyrics.

Randy said it was blazing, molten hot; Paula said he has the most definitive sound, perfect song; Simon said it was fantastic.

Michael Johns sings “Dream On” by Aerosmith in this April 8 American Idol video clip. I like how he explains how he identifies with the “Dream On” lyrics in his pre-performance video.

Randy thought it was a pretty good song choice, but some pitch problems; Paula thought it was a perfect song to pick, he was unbelievable; Simon thought it was a very good performance, but thought he was doing an impersonation of a rock star.

In an effort to not look like a chump during the American Idol “Idol Gives Back” campaign, Idol host Ryan Seacrest has donated his paycheck to the fundraiser.
