American Idol 8 listens to wannabes in San Francisco in this January 20 recap of the auditions – 12 made it through to Hollywood, including Kai Kalama, seen in the video clip above. Here’s the rundown:

  • Tatiana Del Toro, 22, San Juan, Puerto Rico – a psychic told her she’d make it through (giggle giggle giggle – does this girl ever stop giggling?) and she gets through, despite the horrific dress! Tatiana sang “Never Loved a Man” by Aretha Franklin.
  • Nick Reed, 17, Antelope, CA – this guy was a little… er… creepy?
  • Jiayi Yu, 16, San Mateo, CA – sang “We Built This City.” Uh… no.
  • Dean-Anthony Bradford, 27, Pasadena, CA – sang “Stars” by Simply Red – maybe oversang? And… ew… “the carpet matches the drapes?” NO.
  • Jesus Valenzula, 29, North Highlands, CA – Simon said he’s a nice guy but he’s not going to win it – Paula and Kara put him through to Hollywood. And those kids are too cute!
  • Dalton Powell, 19, Manteca, CA – gifted with the Rubik’s cube, but not so impressive in the audition room, singing “Ooh Baby Baby” by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. This was an easy no for the judges.
  • Akilah Askew-Gholston, 26, Oakland, CA – who studies for an American Idol audition – although she sounds a little confused. Huh? Rectum? She tried an original song and then another… and then talked (a lot), but in the end it was a resounding no.
  • John Twiford, 27, Sherman Oaks, CA – sang “Overjoyed” – Yes!
  • Allison Iraheta, 16, Los Angeles, CA – sang “Natural Woman” – through to Hollywood!
  • Raquel Houghton, 28, Los Angeles, CA – sang “Son of a Preacher Man” – got a golden ticket!
  • Annie Murdoch, 28, Novato, CA – sang “Summertime” and my ears started to bleed a little. No.
  • Adam Lambert, 26, Hollywood, CA – has been singing since he was 10, doing musical theater; sang Bohemian Rhapsody and Simon thought he was too theatrical, but he got unanimous YES’s!
  • Kai Kalama, 26, San Clemente, CA – last of the day and he has a heartbreaking story – taking care of his ill mom during the daytime and giving up his social life in the process. He sang “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” by the Platters and gets through to Hollywood.
