Over 12,000 people showed up in San Diego to audition for “American Idol 7” – and overall, there seemed to be less audition nuttiness than usual (crazy costumes, telling off the judges), but there was some talent in the bunch as 31 hopefuls made it through to the Hollywood round.

Here are the highlights of the “American Idol 7” San Diego audition folks who made it through to Hollywood:

  • Tetiana Ostapowych, 24, Venice, CA – sang “Someone to Watch Over Me”
  • Perrie Cataldo, 27, Cataldo, AZ — single father after son’s mother died; sang “I’ll Make Love to You”
  • Michael Johns, 28, Los Angeles, CA – sang Otis Redding song
  • Samantha Musa, 20, Baldwin Park, CA – thinks Simon is hot, her sister sits in with the judges; sang Aretha Franklin song
  • David Archuleta, 16, Murray, UT – emotional story of vocal paralysis, which he recovered from; sang “Waiting on the World to Change,” by John Mayer
  • Carly Smithson, 23, San Diego, CA – owns tattoo shop; from Ireland, auditioned for season 5 and made it to Hollywood, but Visa paperwork didn’t come through in time; sang “I’m Every Woman”
