Adam Lambert AMA Performance – Sexy or Too Raunchy? (Video)

Whether you loved or hated it, Adam Lambert’s AMA performance of “For Your Entertainment” is getting loads of attention. Sound off (and check out the video clip)… do you think Adam Lambert’s AMA performance was over-the-top sexy or just too dang raunchy?
I’ve been reading some comments this morning about Adam Lambert’s 2009 American Music Awards performance and there are a lot of people that are not too happy about it. And that includes Lambert fans!
It’s not that we haven’t seen racy musical performances on TV before – Madonna and Britney Spears come to mind – but Lambert’s was so sexy that it was censored for the West coast telecast.
How do you think Adam Lambert did? Were you shocked by his simulated oral sex bit and grabbing the keyboardist for a guy-on-guy kiss?
All that shock factor aside, I didn’t like all of the shrieking and thought the vocals were just so-so.

I thought Adam’s performance was fantastic! He is the package deal for a rock star. It wasn’t any different than Madonna singing “Like a Virgin” or what some of these rappers sing for song lyrics. I say “rock on” Adam and I have been anxiously waiting for your first CD and it is finally here.

Oh yes, one man kissing another is the reason for the downfall of the entire system; it has nothing at all to do with hypocritical asshats. How many of you watched Madonna kiss Brit or writhe around in the 80’s to Like a Virgin? Grow up, put on your big girl panties and quit freaking out.
The performance wasn’t anything other than spectacularly shocking – something musicians have been doing for decades, from Kiss to Ozzy. It’s nothing new. And I think the man did an amazing job.

I find it hilarious that this performance is being hail as some type of break-out performance in light of the David Bowie’s, Mick Jagger’s, Prince’s, & Madonna’s that laid the ground work for these type of shock-value performances many years before. In truth there was nothing really original or shocking about this performance unless you consider how truly generic and mediorce the song is. Though I appluad his openess regarding his sexuality I actually expect some actual talent to be on display. Hopefully Adam can re-focus on the music & not just be another adrogynous Bowie, Prince, MJ clonethat is outed.

Adam has some vocal talent, but the song sucks and so did his delivery. His theatrics were not for TV either. If he wanted to promote light porn, then he should have chosen the correct forum, and that is not mainstream television. As a gay male, I’m disgusted with how lewdness has become an acceptable homosexual practice, and how a very vocal segment of the gay community finds this to be acceptable behavior for every day life. Homosexuality is not all about gay sex, but one would think so by the way many in the gay community behave. No wonder so many ordinary gay men prefer NOT to be associated with the gay lifestyle.

I am mostly surprised at the lack of singing talent used in this performance. The only time I was able to completely hear him over the background vocalists was when he was screaming (which anyone can do, he just thinks it’s his trademark), and there were many times when he wasn’t singing into the microphone. How did he get so far through American Idol without learning the basics of performing? Oh, Adam, here’s your first strike.

Especially if you are not a fan of American Idol, I can see how you would feel that he is talentless and not unique. I don’t mind televison getting racier, let’s face it that is where our society is headed, but lets give it a later time slot and proper ratings. I know people who’s young children were up when this aired and it was not appropriate for them. And, how long will it be before the keyboardist and female dancer sue for sexual harrassment or, better yet, sexual assault. Apparently, the only rehearsed part was the simulated oral sex so they did not consent to his actions. Especially, the female dancer whose leotard he pulled aside in order to stick his hand in her crotch. And, before anyone says it, not everyone would consider it an honor to be sexually manipulated in order to promote Lambert’s agenda and career. By the way Adam, your voice sucked!

I felt like he had the world in his hand when he finished on American Idol. Now I am not so sure. I agree, however, that he was probably extremely nervous. It kept building up and building up and I am sure it is a lot of pressure to walk out and perform at the top of your game. But he wasn’t even singing close to what I have seen in the past. If he wanted to make a gay statement, I am not sure that was the kind of statement to make. I could care less if he is gay, green or bipolar. I became a fan because of his talent. Everything else to me doesn’t matter. I am just really sad. Because face it America is so afraid of different. I also do agree this was not one of his best performances but he is a amazing performer and can do much better. And back to all the huff about this performance it was only like 30 seconds of the whole performance that all the talk is about. Face it we have seen much worst. That did alienate a lot of people when he had his golden opportunity to win a lot of people over. I know enough about Adam that I will give him a second chance. But all he needs to do is sing, from his heart. It is sad he felt he had to “compete” with any other singer. I am really let down. Adam thinks we all should just get over it, it was just a performance. But performances make or break your career. Adam you may have a better career in the rauncy porn industry if you are going to take such an important performance opportunity and do THAT. OMG WTF, that was so distasteful. You know, for everyone saying he can not sing then clearly you didn’t see him on Idol b/c his performances were spot on every week. Like someone already mentioned, he even sung Mad World better than the original. I am sad to say that I think fame has kind of went to his head where he thinks he can do whatever and it’s okay. He’s now a member of the Britney, Madonna club where you push the envelope for shock factor. The thing is that Madonna and Britt are great performers and okay singers (Don’t get me wrong I love them both, but let’s just be serious), but when I watched Adam on Idol I thought this kid can sing and I don’t care if he’s gay or straight, he is just that good. However the problem with pushing the envelope is that you have to top it the next time and the next time ect. I just thought he was a good enough singer alone to not have to resort to such cheap tactics. I guess I was wrong b/c his show was raunchy and I am surely no prude. I didn’t mind the kiss at all, I could care less that he’s gay and he’s right women push the envelope and get away with it more than guys can BUT the simulated oral sex was tacky, the leash and S&M even worse (if it were MTV I wouldn’t of minded so much but this was the AMA on basic cable TV which kids have access to). It makes gay people look bad IMO, I am a straight girl but have a lot of gay guy friends and they even were upset about this performance b/c they say that Adam makes gays all look like oversexualized in your face types. They want to be taken seriously and this type of thing makes it hard for them. I get that Adam’s gay, but so are a lot of people and performers for that matter why does he have to throw it in everyone’s face? Elton John is gay and a performer and he doesn’t resort to this type of thing, he lets his music stand for itself. The bigger problem IMO here is that Adam doesn’t think he did ANYTHING wrong, hello I don’t know what planet AL has been living on, but a lot of kids have a TV in their room now days and while most parents only let the kids have like basic cable or block the bad channels if they have full cable/satelite so they expect that the basic cable channels would be safe for kids to watch. Don’t get me wrong the AMA’s should be something that shouldn’t be inappropriate for older kids to watch, but of course Adam wasn’t the ONLY one on the AMA’s like he pointed out that was racy, he was just the worst. He said he’s not a babysitter but does he not realize that b/c he decided to be on Idol that he then would have millions of young fans out there? So, therfor he should then assume, as any resonible minded person with a brain, that parents would let their children watch the AMA’s because 1. their kids are fans of his 2. a show on regular network television shouldn’t be inappropriate for kids to watch. It is sad that kids can not turn on the TV without seeing rauchy over sexualized stuff like this. If this had been on MTV or any other cable network then it wouldn’t of been quite as bad b/c parents would know that it may not be appropriate for kids to watch but parents can’t sensor what their kids watch 247 anymore without taking the TV away which is silly. I realize that in a lot of places this came on later at night, but where I live I believe it was around 8pm or 9pm that it came on so most kids especially older kids are still awake. His flippant attitude about not caring what his young fans think or see is sad, it really is. He can say well, Brittney does it, but so what. Does he want to follow in her foot steps? Just b/c she does something doesn’t make it okay either. However at least her more risque performances were on MTV and not ABC. Like I said I am not a prude, the kiss wasn’t a big deal and honestly that shouldn’t of been a concern for most parents, but the simulated oral sex and the S&M stuff were just plain raunchy, no matter who does it whether that person were a guy or girl. So if Britt did it then I’d be saying the same thing. He thinks it is being blown out of proportion and that b/c others do cheap tactics for shock value that it’s okay, but what he isn’t considering is that when Britt/Madonna kissed their was a public outrage as well and that was on MTV and when Miley danced around on a stripper pole (which actually really wasn’t a stripper pole but you know what I mean) their was a public outrage and then the whole Janet/Justin fiasco well there was a big public outrage about that so this is nothing new and he’s not being singled out because he’s a guy or b/c he’s gay. The saddest part is that I realize he doesn’t want to be pigeon-holed into the bubble gum mainstream, BUT he did put himself in this position by being on Idol in the first place and why can’t he let his singing stand for itself? Yes, we know he’s gay, I understand his need to let people in on his sexuality, but he doesn’t have to do that in a raunchy way b/c then he isn’t educating people he is turning people off. He is coming across now as a bit of a whore, which is not a good image either. Like I said he is a good enough singer that he doesn’t have to do the whole shock thing, but I will say that his singing on this particular night was terrible and it isn’t b/c he can’t sing. I think it was that he was trying so hard to shock people that he failed to deliver in vocals, he sounded shrieky and yelled most of the song. Basically, the boy can sing so he needs to do that and if he is unable to sing well and dance around then he should sit on a stool and sing his heart out and then people would be talking about how amazing his singing was instead of how he was raunchy on the AMA’s. That’s just my opinon of course he can do what he wants, but he is gonna lose some, if not a lot of fans in the process if he doesn’t shape up b/c his biggest fanbase was his AI fans. If that is not the image he wanted to portray then he should of been this way on AI instead of sugar coating it just to try and win and then completely changing after he lost on AI. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to be yourself, but there is something wrong with worrying more about shock value than your vocals.

Jennifer, I believe that when Britt and Madonna kissed people did care b/c I remember people being quite upset about it. However the biggest difference wasn’t that it was a guy/guy kiss instead of girl/girl kiss, it was the fact that Britt and Madonna were on the MTV Music Awards, which people would expect to be more risque and AL was on the AMA’s which was broadcast on reg. basic cable which most people who aren’t living in the dark ages have access to and like I stated above that most kids now have televisions in their rooms with basic cable (channels 1-12). AL keeps saying that 1. he is not a babysitter and 2. that this show was on late at night around 11pm BUT IT WAS NOT ON THAT LATE EVERYWHERE. Here where I live it came on at I believe 8pm (maybe it was even 7pm) and not 11pm and no he’s right he is not a babysitter yet he is a role model for a lot of young kids and I’m not just talking about teenagers, I am talking about small children that watched him on AI with their parents. So considering he has a verasitile fan base consisting of all ages and that a lot of kids wanted to see him perform and their parents let them watch thinking well, it’s on basic cable it can’t be that bad, he messed up. Parents shouldn’t be concerned about the kiss (it’s easy enough to sit your child down and tell them that some people like guys and some like girls), no one should unless your homophobic, but you should be concerned that your child could turn on the TV and see AL simulating oral sex and S&M. I don’t care if they did post a warning, it shouldn’t be that way on the AMA’s it should be appropriate for ALL ages because people of ALL AGES love music. I realize that with so many families now have computers in their house and kids with computers in their rooms and that kids have easy access to worse things, but parents should definitely monitor their children on computers (there are actually even worse things than porn that you child could be doing like talking in chat rooms to people that they don’t know and that could lead to them getting abducted) with that said, parents shouldn’t have to monitor basic cable such as regular ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX channels especially before 10pm. Also, like I stated it wasn’t just AL, like AL did point out that had a risque performance, there was Lady GaGa and Eminem. I don’t think this is that big of a deal myself, he messed up now he needs to do better next time. I do feel he knew exactly what he was doing, he was trying to shock and I still think he shouldn’t have to resort to such ridiculous tactics to get attention, his singing is enough to get the attention yet instead of worrying about singing well he worried more about shocking people to get publicity. Which when you think about it the only person AL really hurt was himself. I love Britney Spears, but let’s face it she hasn’t been a positive role model by any means ( she was worried so much about shedding the whole Disney image that she went above and beyond and kind of wrecked her own image for a while) and she is always having to shock to get publicity. She’s a pretty good singer and an awesome performer. AL is an awesome singer and sometimes an awesome performer as well, but he doesn’t have to do the whole shock thing b/c there is a huge problem with that and that is like I already said, he is going to have to top it the next time and the next time and pretty soon everyone runs out of things to shock with. Does he really want to follow in Britt’s foot steps? Yes she has made millions for herself and done really well, she has also had to out do herself to the point that she is out of tricks now it seems. Why would you want to be like her when you are a much much better singer? Why not be original instead of copying others? I don’t get it….I just hope that on his next performance he lets his singing shine instead of trying to top this.

Now, as a gay-person, I can speak from experience that the moment people get wind of your sexuality (not the case for straight people, as we live in a VERY hetero-sexist society), that’s all you become.
He didn’t choose to come out, he was thrust out by all the rumour mongering and back-handed compliments. He knew he couldn’t keep it a secret, but wanted it known it wasn’t what defined him, as it shouldn’t ever be. But lo and behold, he was proven wrong by every last one of you.
So this was his Eminem moment. His, “The Way I Am”, in performance if not in song, to tell you all and the recording industry that you are the groups marginalizing him as nothing but a gay performer. So he’s going to give you the scary-homo routine because that’s what you want to see, ultimately. You want him to be lewd and disgusting so you can feel safe having your bigoted opinion.
Now let me clarify, I know that not everyone’s opinions were mean-spirited and bigoted, but even the person who said he was gay and felt that Adam Lambert was part of the reason people don’t associate with the gay community was marginalizing him. I was surprised that you did not seem to get what he was doing. I’m sure you’ve had to deal with consistently fighting off the stereotypes and the attention your sexuality ultimately attract.
It’s hard, especially as a performer (I’ve been an actor for 10 years), to breakaway from the concept of gay when you’ve been outed. Not only is it difficult to be taken seriously, and not have everyone assume you’d rather audition for The Laramie Project or Angels in America et cetera, but also the characters that are written as gay go to straight people anyway (Brokeback Mountain anyone? The L Word?).
So before you criticize him for “going there”, think for just a second what he’s actually trying to say.
Of course it was over the top, that was the only way he could get your attention and tell you to forget the whole gay thing and just let him be a performer!

I think that Adam Lambert has an exceptional vocal range and is very talented at many singing styles, HOWEVER he went a little over the top for his break out performance. I would say that for the first time you perform a song you should probably sing it as it is on the CD so people see what they are buying. He did not do this AND he did, in my opinion, go over the top with the sexcapades. If toned down just a tad it would have only been as overtly sexual as Brittney’s “Im a slave for you”. I dont remember anyone bitching about that video! There is a double standard in the industry. I think he just broke another ceiling. People dont like it when the norm is broken. So overall I say he is still learning, but I dont think it will hurt him down the road. Any press is good in music. Brittney’s back too and look and if she can come back full swing after being a shaved headed umbrella toting car beater woman, than he has a good chance at success!

Ok, my objective POV: His performance was clearly not his best. He was pitchy and over dramatic at times. But he did hit some great notes as well.
My subjective opinion (but this isn’t simply concerning Dave, it’s what Dave has now joined): We’re victim to our own so called liberalistic views. Sexual liberty – madonna paved the way blah blah blah. WHAT sexual liberty? Girls are still killing themselves to be thin and high fashion! A large majority of female music videos are sexual in nature. So what do aging teens at home think? Sexual availability will bring you love and much needed attention from your desired fantasy lover. Why is it that no one has anything else to talk about? I don’t even listen to the radio anymore. Mainstream music for the most part has become so one dimensional. Sex, drugs, money. Thaaaat’s pretty much it. There is so little substance in the entertainment industry these days. Whether it’s movies, tv shows, music/music videos….it all disgusts & frankly saddens me: whether it’s female, male, or both. Guy videos degrade females as walking sex toys, and the girl videos “sass” the girl up as some power driven independent woman, and yet the girl is barely wearing anything while she shoves her hairy monster into the camera’s face! Yeah, you’re bringing your girl power image out nice and strong for the men to take seriously. BANG up job ladies. Way to represent. Are we so out of control that sex has become the dominant theme in our art? Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought there was more to life than that. Call me a prude, an old lady, whatever – but there is no liberty in what the world has become. We have this foolish belief that all the sexually charged predecessors of the music industry have paved the way for sexual liberty but we’ve increased incidences of STDs, pregnancies, abortions, rape, and more. Yep, homeland of the free. The only difference with david is that he’s scaring a bunch of homophobes. But in essence he’s stooping to the demands of the same sex driven industry that have called him to make music. Teen pregnancy is especially continuing to grow at an alarming rate – gee I wonder why…We’re horn dog masochists. And I don’t suspect things will get any better…it’s too bad really. I’ll be expecting flack for this comment, but y’know what? Freedom of opinion. So if people disagree (which I’m sure they will), respond respectfully – God did give you common sense to carry out a civil conversation no matter how annoying my comment was

And everyone that didn’t like his performance, can’t say that they have never made a sexual action of any kind in public, or told a dirty joke, or for MOST, not all, kissed someone of the same sex. There are a lot of performers, Lady Gaga, Brittany Spears, Madonna are a few that have always had performances just as racy or sexual as his, but because he is a gay man everyone says it was bad, and he shouldn’t have done it? well shame on America. They lip sing and that just makes me think that if they cant sing themselves then they are definetly not true artist!!! Adam has always been able to sing and he proved that that night at the AMA’S!!! So what he kissed a guy!!!! Thats deffinetly not as bad as half the things other artist do when they perform. TV, music videos and much more are so much worse then that. I mean come on grow up people!! It’s no longer just a world of hetersexuals. There are many gay artist and a lot of them are too scared to admitt it. Adam’s performance was perfect in portraying a message. I think it showed us who he is and how proud he is of that. I accept him for who he is and I am a christian heterosexual. People need to realize that we are all different and we cannot change who we are to please others, so we should just accept others for who they are. The fact that Adam is gay should not affect what people think of him as an artist. Truthfully on the vocal part of the performance Adam lost focus. The message was clear but the pitchiness and screaming didn’t always fit in perfectly. I think Adam can recover from the negative comments. I hope he comes out with even more songs and I hope I get to see him perform someday. He really does have a great voice and an appearance anyone can admire–no matter what he’s wearing.

If you listen to the lyrics of the song and all the things that are going on, it almost seems that this performance was crafted out of spite. I bet that Lambert did this because he felt that people voted against him on Idol because he’s gay. Lets be honest, he was the best singer, and the fact that he didn’t win shows something about at least the taste of the viewers.
So instead of doing nothing and acting like it was a fair decision Lambert has instead decided to force this down our throats. This was a statement about sexuality sure, but not about his so much as the viewers. The fact that it was on television when children could watch was probably not on his mind, (but it certainly should have been). I would say, if he had just kissed a guy, there wouldn’t be any problem, but the simulated sex acts make one wonder if this guy isn’t just trying to cross the line, but he has completely forgotten where the line is!
To sum up, too sexy for TV, but still shows forethought. Three out of four stars.

I was NOT a huge Adam Lambert fan during AI, although I did appreciate his amazing vocal abilities (and although not pretty, sticking your tongue out like that when you sing, does bring about another vocal level – let’s just get ’straight’ on that) and his unique performance art. That’s what needs to be realized – he is a ‘performance artist’, just like GaGa. He is unique to this bubble-gum pop industry (and I’m so tired of all the Mickey Mouse kids trying to be pop stars – get real!). My husband bought his CD for me for Christmas (btw, my husb is 53 and I’m 45) and I am completely blown away by how smart this young man is. He has several great songs on this CD that are written by Pink, GaGa, the new judge from AI, etc. Every song is different, the vocals are amazing (and yes, sometimes the over the top vocals get old, but he’s been coached and has toned it down quite a bit on this CD); it’s like this crazy mix of Scissor Sisters, Freddy Mercury, and GaGa – just pure genius. Adam Lambert is going to have a long, beautiful career if he continues to surround himself with the right people/coaches/mentors. A person’s sexual orientation makes no matter. For those self-righteous, hypocritical ‘critics’ who continue to blog about this young talent – Grow up, open your minds, and educate yourself.
