Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Asking NBC to Cancel “The Baby Borrowers”

The commercials for NBC’s reality series The Baby Borrowers leave me feeling distressed – according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), the babies in the show may be experiencing distress of their own. The AACAP is asking NBC to cancel The Baby Borrowers as a result.
On The Baby Borrowers, couples ages 18-20 experience having a baby for three days to see how their lives will change.
The AACAP wants NBC to pull The Baby Borrowers, saying, the experience “can lead children to feel distress and anxiety.”
It sounds like The Baby Borrowers’ days may be numbered – NBC’s message board has received thousands of posts asking about the show, with some mentioning that the concept borders on child abuse.
NBC assures viewers that there is an around-the-clock nanny supervising each family and the babie’s real parents are only next door, watching with a video monitor. A rep for NBC says, “The producers of the show took all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety and welfare of the children participating in the series. The environment was carefully controlled, and the children were properly cared for at all times.”
