The 2008 Summer Olympics opening night ceremony in Beijing turned out to be a ratings winner – 34.2 million people tuned in to watch the ceremony, including the torch lighting spectacle (see video above).

This makes the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics the biggest TV event since the Super Bowl – and the biggest viewership fro an Olympic opening ceremony not held in the U.S.
