‘The Moment of Truth’ Debuts January 23 on Fox (Video)
Have you seen the promos for “The Moment of Truth,” the new game show on Fox? “The Moment of Truth” requires contestants to tell the whole truth in front of an audience and the viewers, as well as family, friends and co-workers.
Contestants are confronted with pretty tough questions, including, “Did you ever think your spouse might be gay?” and “Do fat people repulse you?”
And how do we know if the contestants are being truthful? With a lie detector, naturally (Anyone else reminded of when Jerry Seinfeld was hooked up to the lie detector to see if he watches Melrose Place? No?).
“The Moment of Truth” is not a new concept – it originated in Columbia, but was canceled when things went a little too far and a woman admitted to putting a hit out on her husband. Yikes.
Executive producer and creator Howard Schultz says, “We’re not out to destroy somebody. I don’t think there’s any joy in watching someone crumble under the lights. So, typically, the people that we cast to be contestants are stronger people. They have good self-esteem and a strong sense of themselves.”
If you say so.
So, what’s at stake on “The Moment of Truth?” Cash, baby. A $500,000 grand prize is awarded to the lucky contestant who can truthfully answer 21 questions about themselves.
Six different earning levels are part of the game, allowing contestants to walk away or take their truthiness all the way to the big prize.
Before a contestant appears on “The Moment of Truth,” they are asked between 50 and 75 questions (while hooked to a polygraph) – 21 of those same questions are asked during the actual show.
According to Schultz, “They do not know the results of the polygraph or what 21 questions will be asked. They’re free to change their answer the day of taping the show, but the polygraph is used as the measuring stick.”
“The Moment of Truth” will be hosted by Mark L. Walberg and premieres January 23 at 8 PM.
